As a consideration to the environment, my wallet, and my serious concerns about trusting long-term power drain (while maintaining output voltage) to “D” cells, my design for this application would be based on a $10.90 (at Amazon), 4.5 Ah sealed lead-acid rechargeable (SLA) battery. At these kinds of current drains, a garden variety, high-current (5-10 A) silicon diode will provide about a 1-volt drop, to provide ≈ 5 vdc at the output. If you have a serious case of OCD, you can buy a buck converter for $10 – $15 (…it even comes with an LED or LCD display; one even comes with a USB output!) to give you exactly 5 volts. (And don’t forget–a “boost converter” is a fixed cost of the design which is being offered.)

Let me flesh it out for you. Sitting across Europe is this massive barrier, the Alps. And sitting smack on top of that barrier is Switzerland. OK, so the Wars of Europe have pretty much fizzled, and now you have this explosion of trade, with all manner of goods and materials fighting to get over those Alps from Northern Europe into Italy, and from Italy into Northern Europe. So what happened was entirely predictable: vastly long lines of queuing trucks grinding their way up and down in low gear (or low-low gear), burning up staggeringly vast amounts of diesel just to get a hundred miles from Germany to Italy (or France to Italy, or Slovenia to Italy, you get the idea). And you have the same pattern with the Carpathian Mountains over to the East, and in the USA to the Appalachians running the full length of the Country from Maine to Georgia.

There is a big battle between the different manufacturers on the laser and bending front and everyone is really investing a lot of money in upgrading the systems to achieve a better product. Waterjet cutting has also been improved tremendously and one should think of which machine is the correct one for a specific application. Waterjet or laser cannot replace each other, but will compliment your service offering. All the latest developments also point out that we as industry should invest in training and that there is a huge opportunity for young people. Although a lot can be automatically manufactured, humans must do the final assembly. A German customer once said to me “you should not use technology to replace the lack of your employee’s skills.”

Keeping the window down a crack only solves that if the temperature is reasonable. Are there any better solutions when it does not? Wouldn’t be too hard to do the math on CO2 levels and most cars are very much the opposite of air or water tight.
We got onto the buzz about “transparent aluminum” as a result of a Tweet from whence the image above came. This Tweet was posted by [Jo Pitesky], a Science Systems Engineer at the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena. [Jo] reported that at a recent JPL technology open house she had the chance to handle a tube of material that looks for all the world like a section of glass tubing, but was billed as transparent aluminum. [Jo] tweeted this because it was an interesting artifact that few people get to play with and she’s right, this is fascinating!
