You could put a bunch of people in a room and dose them intermittently with x-rays that will cumulatively kill them (later), and they couldn’t tell. Not being able to detect something that will kill you isn’t a good test for whether or not something will kill you, given that our bodies have a quite limited range of onboard sensors for EM.
