But there’s fun to be had here year-round at the Lafayette Reservoir (3849 Mt. Diablo Blvd.), the crown jewel of Lafayette’s trail system that draws droves on weekends for fishing, pedal-boat and row-boat rentals on the reservoir, and an easy 2.7-mile stroll around its paved loop path. The reservoir also plays host to Concert at the Rez in May, featuring the Big Band of Rossmoor and local school music program bands, plus the Reservoir Run in October. Hikers looking for more of a challenge can easily access the almost five-mile Rim Trail from multiple trailheads, with plenty of hills to challenge your quads and glutes. —Kristen Haney

Some researchers are experimenting with the formation of CNTs from ethylene. Supported catalysts (Fe, Co, Ni), containing either a single metal or a mixture of metals, seem to induce the growth of isolated SWNTs or SWNT bundles in the ethylene atmosphere. The production of SWNTs, as well as double-walled CNTs (DWNTs), on Mo and Mo-Fe alloy catalysts has also been demonstrated. CVD of carbon within the pores of a thin alumina template (called a membrane) with or without a Ni catalyst has been achieved. Ethylene was used with reaction temperatures of 545°C for Ni-catalyzed CVD, and 900°C for an uncatalyzed process. The resultant carbon nanostructures have open ends, with no caps.

Last December, at the factory’s Christmas party, Pratt was feeling so optimistic about the future that he announced hopes to grow to a thousand employees. Matthew Slaughter, the dean of Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business, told me, “It belies the simple narrative that there are American companies and there are foreign companies, that someone wins and someone loses.”
Although articles posted in Oilprice.com have referenced, and discussions have focused, on all manner of technological innovation to try to coax some extra barrels of oil out of the ground in order to satisfy what seems to be a never-ending upwelling of demand, it might be sobering for the readership to contemplate the Brave New World where demand dramatically shrinks, and producers are left facing a market that is unwilling to absorb their output. And how likely is that? The conventional wisdom guys will scoff and say: “That is never going to happen. We have to continue to climb until we get to Peak Oil, and that is X decades away, so we gotta keep pumping! And fracking! And drilling! And go into Deep Water! And go into the Arctic! And…”
