On a Thursday morning last month, Pratt walked me through the factory’s main building—there are three in total—demonstrating the prosaic manufacturing process of Mid-Continent’s most profitable product: Paper Tape Strip Nails, a row of thirty-three nails held together by paper, made to be used in nail guns. Pay here is modest, from $11.50 an hour for new hires to twenty-five dollars an hour for those with engineering skills, but Pratt clearly pays attention to what’s going on in the lives of his employees. When he was eight years old, in Puxico, Missouri, a rural town of fewer than a thousand people, his mother suffered a ruptured aneurysm and spent months in a St. Louis hospital. His father, who repaired furnaces for a living, remained at her side; his father’s boss invited Pratt and his two sisters to stay with his family, and paid Pratt’s dad even while he wasn’t working. Pratt, the first in his family to attend college, studied accounting at Southeastern Missouri State University and received a job offer from a Big Eight accounting firm after graduation. But, rather than moving to St. Louis, he married his high-school sweetheart, settled in Puxico, just a mile from his childhood home, and began work at Mid-Continent. He started as an accountant and eventually worked his way to plant manager. He never forgot the act of generosity that his father received from his employer.
Another issue is that riders REALLY like to customize their gear. When Bontrager forced it’s riders to use Bontrager saddles for marketing purposes, the Trek team was up in arms. Riders get used to a particular brand and ‘feel’ and don’t like this being changed. If the UCI came down and only let riders choose from a few handlebars/seatposts/groupos/saddles to put on their bike, I promise you riders would raise hell.
The other benefit is that machining is so fast, especially with the fiber laser, that it is a cost-effective way of taking weight out of components by incorporating numerous holes and slots. It would be too labor-intensive and therefore uneconomical to do manually.

Wound up buying a MIG welder (great deal on eBay) since the expense alone was about the same as the battery trays so figure I can use for custom fabrication work also since I got salvage yard body panels (50% at LKQ on certain holidays) and some new cab corners-door bottoms-rocker panels (great deal on eBay) I found for the Ram and need to make a spacer roll bar for the walk through (cut out cab back and bed/cap front). Thinking about using the bed side wall space for custom storage like the new Ram’s have though opening from the side versus top.
Yes. Yes, and a fair bit more in fact! Running on the standard (non ECO) mode, the RMA 448 TC drove around for almost exactly 30 minutes, covering a very healthy 16m-long section of our 40m-wide lawn (not pictured). That was 640m² of open lawn – far exceeding Stihl’s claims for the coverage. Excellent.
